For about two years I got some pieces of terrain for Warhammer Fantasy laying around wating to get painted. But I didn’t find the right colour shemes.

I wanted that the tower looks like if it is made of old stone. In order to do that I painted the watchtower with Steel Legion Drab and washed it with Nuln Oil. After that I brushed the tower with Codex Grey and finally with Terminatus Stone. I painted the whole tower in this way. The wooden floor was painted with a layer of Rhinox Brown, followed by a mix of Rhinox Brown and Kommando Khaki and pure Kommando Khaki. The base was painted in the same way as the bases of my warhammer 40k terrain pieces (Mounfang Brown, Bleached Bone). The tower ruine was painted exactly the same.

The houses, yes they are just houses… really. The stone elements where painted similar to the towers, but the wall was dry brushed with bleached bone. After that I washed it with Agrax Earthshade. The roof of the first house was drybrushed with Mephiston Red, followed by Squig Orange and finally Kindle Flame and the second one with Regal Blue and Bleached Bone. There were some Metal elements, wich I painted with Shining Gold, followed by a layer of Shining Gold and Mirthil silver. To let it look more aged I added some Hawk Tourquise.

I really like these propaganda posters wich I added to my 40k scenery and I wanted to add something near it. I found some posters and they look really good. 🙂

[WH40K] Painting a Battlefield

[sc:pice]

I bought a Realm of Battle board from Games Workshop some weeks ago and it was my largest project ever. It took me some discipline to finish this one. But in the end I made it and I like it 🙂

I played on on such a board some time ago and I realized, that it has a really smooth surface. When you put for example a regiment base on an  oblique surface it could slide downwards. I wanted to prevent this. I searched through the web and found a post on the dakka dakka board, where someone created a chaos wasteland battlefield. I also wanted to add a layer of sand to the field.

I used plenty of glue and water and a large brush, wich I bought in a home improvement store. I realized that the best wy to put some sand on such a large surface is to put a layer with glue and water on it and scatter plenty of sand on the board. When this layer dryed I put an additional layer of water and glue on it to make it more robust. Some small stone were added for some details.

I wanted to paint the board as much as easy enough. The process of painting took just one day. I started with a layer of mounfang brown (bestial brown), wich I drybrushed on the sand. Followed by a layer of screaming skull (bleached bone). This was all. When doing that I tried to avoid painting stripe patterns. In order to do that I moved the brush in a circular way.

[sc:pice]

I painted the rocks and cliffs with a strong layer of dawnstone, followed by highlights with terminatus stone. This simple sheme is really effective.

I wanted to embedd the skull pits into the existing painting sheme and didn’t add some more colour. Instead I increased the amount of terminatus stone, wich I dry brushed  over the structure.

[WH40k] Creating some Scenery II

[sc:pics]

[sc:pice]

In the previous post I wrote about some new scenery I prepared for painting. I dreamed for about 5 years of my own battlefield and now it was time to start this project. It took me approximately 5 days to paint these scenery pieces.

For the craters I used a basic painting. I started dry brushing them with bestial brown, followed by a mix aof bestial brown and bleached bonw. I finished the craters with a dry brush with pure bleached bone.

I wanted that my street lamps look like a small highlight between the other pieces of terrain, wich are obviously larger. In order to do that I dry brushed them with shining gold and washed them with agrax earth shade. This gives the golden colour a dark shade and I gave it some highlights with a mix of shining gold and mirthil silver. After that I added some effects of corrosion with a mix of hawk tourquise and a huge amount of water. I took a standard brush and put this mix to some parts of the lamp wich, in my opinion, should look more aged.

[sc:pice]

After I painted this small pieces I put my attention on the Manufactorum. I love dry brushing and so I gave it a quick dry brush with boltgun metal, followed by a mix of bestial brown and blazing orange and after that by pure blazing orange. Finally I put some highlights with boltgun metal  The metal doors got some special attention with catachan green, followed by a layer of camo green. I put some accents with a mix of camo green and bleached bone. I tried to give the door an aged appearance.

[sc:pice]

The next building was the Sanctum Imperialis. This time I wanted to try some new colour sheme, because I already painted a Manufactorum in the same way I did some years ago. But this building should look different. I searched through some old white dwarf magazines and the internet to get some inspiration and finally I found a green colour sheme I liked. For my sheme I started dry brushing the building with catachan, followed by straken green. When I searched for an adequate colour for the highlights I found an old flask of rotting flesh. This made a perfect highlight. The metal parts of the building were painted in the same way like the street lamps, wich includes the doors. I also added some imperial propaganda posters to the building.

[sc:pice]

Finally I painted theBasilica Administratum. This is the highest building. I really like it, because it overtops everything on the battlefield. I started dry brushing it with Codex Grey. After that I washed the whole building with asthonian camo shade, wich costs me the whole flask of wash. But it gives the building some kind of rotten green appearance. I highlighted the Administratum with Astronomican Grey.  I also added some propaganda posters to this building and painted the metal parts like the street lamps.

[sc:pice]

I pretty much like the result and I think I don’t need any other scenery for my battlefield. In the next post I will write some lines about my new battlefield 😉

I was asked to do some close ups.

[WH40K] Creating some Scenery I

I decided to buy some new scenery for my new battlefield. And what could be better for a 40K Game than an imperial sector and some new quake cannon craters. I also bought a dreadstone blight tower for my fantasy scenery.

[sc:pics]

[sc:pice]

I couldn’t create 4 buildings from the sprues, just three. But I like the result. Probably I’ll add a shrine of the aquilla. I put the buildings on wooden plates. I don’t like scenery without a base, so I also put the street lamps on small bases. The games workshop city fight buildings are really nice. It took just a few minutes to build some really nice contructions. What I don’t like is the dreadstone tower sprue. The parts don’t fit very well. There is no position for the stairs and I had to modify the wooden floor to fit. But the result looks good and the tower will make a good piece of terrain.

[sc:pice]

I also don’t like clean bases and so every base got some sand and stone.

I think I will paint the buildings as much as easy as I could, because I have problems finishing large projects 😉
